Plan to move Halswell kart track held up By Emily O’Connell FRUSTRATED Halswell residents are pleading with the city council to give the green light for the kart track in their neighbourhood to be able to move. The resource consent for KartSport Canterbury’s $3.5 million move to McLeans Island was lodged in late October. But the process is now on hold. City council head of resource consents John Gibson said more information was needed from KartSport. He said more detail is required for numerous parts of the build such as traffic, noise and earthworks. Kay Stieller, who lives next door to KartSport on Carrs Rd, hopes the move happens soon. “As far as residents are concerned, we just want to get this thing sorted and we’re quite disappointed that there have been so many delays. It should have been done a couple of years ago,” she said. KartSport did not respond to Western News for comment. KartSport was established on Carrs Reserve in Halswell in the early 1960s. Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway said the club’s

activities had become the source of a number of noise complaints from residents in the early 1990s. She said the city council has been monitoring the club’s activities. Ms Stieller said the land her house is on is under constraint

until KartSport move – which means they’re unable to sell. “At the moment, the whole South of Awatea is under constraint – which puts our lives on hold because we can’t do things with our properties which we should be entitled to,” she said.

Cr Galloway said the land is under constraint because measurements taken in the area show noise levels, which would be experienced by new residents, as unacceptable. She said the track will become a district park.

“Relocating the track will free up residential land that could accommodate between 400 and 800 households,” Cr Galloway said. When asked what her advice is to residents, Cr Galloway said “there is a process that the city council need to work through. It will take time but staff are working diligently on this matter.” City council head of planning and strategic transport Richard Osborne said the proposed move has required a comprehensive consent application which has taken months to put together. “A lot of work also went into finding an alternative site that was suitable, and completing the South West Area Plan,” Mr Osborne said. He said the city council will fund the $3.5 million move under their Long Term Plan. “In addition, we are contributing up to a maximum of $100,000 towards the consenting costs,” Mr Osborne said. Cr Galloway said if the resource consent is approved, and there are no appeals, construction of the new facility in McLeans Island should begin next year.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel with the kart club on the move to McLeans Island. But a delay in the resource consent process means it won’t happen for a while yet. On page 3, we look again at the heavy truck issue in nearby Lodestar Ave. But getting Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway to specifically answer the questions is a misson. We wanted to know from Galloway if she would push her council colleagues to stop trucks on Lodestar if a bylaw is put in place. We’re still waiting for the answer. – Barry Clarke

Decision looms on truck issue By Emily O’Connell HALSWELL WARD city councillor Anne Galloway won’t say if she will use her influence to stop heavy trucks driving through residential streets in Wigram Skies. The Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017, which would give the city council the ability to restrict heavy vehicles on certain roads, will go to the city council next week for approval. If the bylaw Anne is approved, Galloway the city council will then consider placing a restriction on Lodestar Ave. When asked specifically yesterday by Western News whether she will push for heavy trucks to be stopped, Cr Galloway would only say she’s been working with Wigram MP Megan Woods and city council staff “to address the concerns of all the residents who are impacted.” “I’ve reassured residents through emails, phone calls and visits that I am taking the concerns seriously and will be

using all tools available to us to manage these,” she said. Dr Woods and Cr Galloway met on Friday to discuss the issues on Lodestar Ave. Two weeks ago Cr Galloway told Western News she doubted the new bylaw will be of any use. “It seems that speed is the issue and the recommendation is for police to get more involved in monitoring this,” Cr Galloway said. Cr Galloway visited Ms Waites on Thursday evening offering her reassurance. Ms Waites said the visit was “lovely” and she can see Cr Galloway is doing her best. Lady Wigram Retirement Village residents, which has also been campaigning to stop the trucks, said they get woken up at 4.30am. Retirement village residents have been lobbying since April when they met with Cr Galloway and Dr Woods asking for a bylaw to stop trucks being allowed to drive through Lodestar Ave. It’s a short cut to work sites in the area. •Readers react page 5

In Brief WIGRAM BUS STOPS The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will discuss whether to approve four new bus stops in Wigram at its meeting tonight. They would be located on the No 100 bus route. The proposed locations are Deal St, The Runway, Corsair Drive and Keene St. The city council staff recommendation is to approve the stops. HALSWELL XMAS TREE The Halswell Community Project is setting up a Christmas gift tree at the Halswell Hub on Halswell Rd. People can donate gifts and food items, which will be given to the City Mission to distribute to families in need at Christmas. Goods will be accepted from next week onwards. NO STOPPING PLANS At its meeting tonight, he Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will discuss whether it is viable to create six new no stopping locations. The proposed restrictions would be on Gallaghan Close, Bibiana St, Mustang Ave, Milnebank St, Rushden Rise and Middlepark Rd and the Craven St roundabout. The streets are all either narrow or have limited visibility.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF VET MICHELE Last month, our super vet nurse Megan wrote about what a nurses day is like at our clinic so I thought I’d give you a little insight into one of my marathon 12 hour Tuesdays, that must start with a flat white! I typically arrive in after 9am due to organizing our teenage lads for school in the morning and walking Lola before our big 12 hour Tuesday. I will then assess, liase with the hospital nurse and devise a plan for any of my sick hospital patients from the previous day. Sometimes I will pass an intensive care patient of mine onto Catherine if my day is full surgically. If there is time before consulting I will phone clients with patient updates or call them in the early afternoon when I’ve finished consulting. Typically I consult seeing patients for 3-4 hours in the morning and then again another 3 hours during the evening. By the time Tuesdays rock around my consulting schedule is almost full so when distressed clients phone with a very sick pet, obviously we will see them but they have to be squeezed into an already full block of consulting. If on arrival they are in urgent need of attention, either I will see them or one of our expert nurses will triage the patient, often take bloods, place a catheter and advise me of their findings. Every patient that rings is seen that day and often we see patients from other clinics because they cant be seen that day at their own Practice. It is common place that during my morning consults I have admitted sick patients for either blood testing, intravenous fluids, xrays or ultrasounds, dentistry, exploratory surgeries, or just observation. I will check on these patients progress, review any blood test results or findings, ring their owners if necessary and work out a treatment plan with the hospital nurse for that day. Once the sickies are dealt with, I turn my attention to the surgical board in which all my surgeries are highlighted in green pen! This past Tuesday was a little insane... Heres my list for that day1. Right Stifle surgery in a sweet 1 year old Golden Retriever called “Bonnie” to repair ruptured ACL ligaments. Bonnie blew her ACL ligaments in both stifles while out exercising with other dogs, so the left is yet to be repaired in 2 weeks depending on how she’s coping after this surgery. 2. A right femoral pinning and wiring in a young cat “Simba” to repair a fractured femur probably caused by a collision with a car. 3. Full shoulder and elbow, spinal, lumbar and hip xrays in Murphy, a 12 year old chocolate Labrador with an annoying persistent right foreleg lameness. 4. A sick, lethargic Chinchilla called Pickles who needed syringe feeding through the day. 5. A Caesarian in a 2 year old Pug called “Geraldine”, who gave birth to 1 live puppy, with 2 unfortunately dying. All in all I have absolutely no time to eat, drink or get into any trouble!! All the above need to be finished with and owners rung by 4pm when I start all over again with consults. Oh I forgot to mention that somewhere in the

day I have a board full of messages to call clients regarding their pets blood or pathology Geraldine and her one little puppy. results, medications requirements, booking in surgeries, queries from other vets or just general advice inquiries. We also look after sick animals for the SPCA and Cats Protection league. We will get a call alerting us to how far away they are and what sort of patient we are seeing, whether a medical or surgical case. That can happen anytime in our day so we fit these consultations around everything else. I feel very good being able to help these less fortunate animals and hopefully give them a chance at recovery and a great life. A day in MY LIFE is a hugely busy, fast paced one where I need to make so many important decisions in a day on the health and well being of the patients in my care. There is no time to second guess yourself, communication between my staff and my clients is key and I need to be very organized and able to prioritise all the patients in my care needing my help. We are so fortunate at McMaster & Heap to have such a highly skilled, clever and practical group of vets and nurses to be able to bounce ideas off when a difficult case needs a plan. Honestly I LOVE my job – actually it’s a priviledge to be able to help animals in the way we can and do. As you can see, every day is extremely different, very challenging at times with difficult medical cases or surgeries but the buck stops with me so to speak. I leave after my 12 hour shift very tired and hungry! But with a big smile on my face knowing that I’ve made a difference in many animals lives that day and so have my fabulous team.

had input over the years in the establishment of facilities like our wonderful new library, the quarry park, an enviable domain and sports fields, successful subdivisions, business facilities, pedestrian and cycle safety, and there’s continuing input into making our roads safer for everyone. Some members have participated for 20 years, and others commit for a short time, but any time spent is valued, and valuable to the whole Halswell community. It only takes a couple of hours once a month. Visitors are always welcome, and new members absolutely vital to the future of the association. News 10,000-plus turn out for annual event THE HORORATA Highland Games has been deemed another success with more than 10,000 people attending. More than 100 Highland dancers, 12 pipe bands, 58 solo pipers and drummers, 18 wool spinners, 140 tuggers, 68 junior warriors, six shooters and 20 heavy athletes competed in the seventh annual games. While moody skies initially hung over the Hororata Domain, as the crowd stood for the Armistice Day remembrance the clouds soon parted with the sun shining through. The Malvern Schools combined Kapa Haka group then welcomed chieftain MP for Selwyn Amy Adams with a stirring performance. The Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship was won by Jono MacFarlane,

who also broke a field record tossing the 56lb weight over a 15.5 foot bar. The women’s Gough CAT Amateur Championship was won by Julie Stechman and the men’s was taken out by David Jackways both also from New Zealand. Thousands of people took on the “Have A Go” challenges and were entertained with numerous performances around the grounds in the stalls. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said this would not be possible without the help of more than 200 volunteers, competitors, partners, stall holders, suppliers and the visitors. “The Hororata Community Trust thanks, everyone who makes our games truly special,” she said.

The ninth annual party had free food, bouncy castles, activities, pony rides, a petting zoo, competitions and a stage programme. Organiser Matt Meek said the party went well. He said the highlight was having everyone together and seeing how excited the whole

community were about the party. Mr Meek said the aim was to make as much as possible free for the community. He said what made this year’s party unique was the toy stall, where children could pick out and take home donated toys for free. Mr Meek said they also had a pre-school zone where young children could participate in different activities.

New headmaster to lead Medbury School into 2018 MEDBURY SCHOOL has a new headmaster joining the team next year. Ian Macpherson, who is currently head of middle school at Brisbane Boys’ College, will make the move across the Tasman. Prior to that, he held the positions of deputy headmaster – operations and head of middle school at Anglican Church Grammar

School in Brisbane. He and his wife, Elizabeth, will both move to Christchurch in January. Medbury trust board chairman David Hiatt said the school was very impressed with Mr Macpherson and listed his credentials. “His experience, his ability to inspire, his understanding of the unique learning needs of boys, as well as his passion

By Emily O’Connell YALDHURST pensioner Muretta Grimwood celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday with friends, family and a carrot cake. Mrs Grimwood was “just delighted” to receive her letter from the Queen. Each year, cards are sent on behalf of the Queen to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthdays and every year thereafter. Mrs Grimwood went to Addington School and then went on to a technical college, where she learned typing for about three years. After finishing school, Mrs Grimwood worked as a wig maker at a shop on Colombo St until 1939 when World War 2 broke out. During the war, she worked in a factory and, in 1942, she married Ron Tolputt. Mr Tolputt was in the Air Force during the war, where he was stationed in Guadalcanal for one year. They had their first and only child, Lyn Wright, in 1947. Mrs Grimwood continued to

Mrs Grimwood remarried in 1969 to Bruce Grimwood and became stepmother to his five children. Mrs Wright said she admires how capable her mother is. Mrs Grimwood stopped driving just three years ago, when her eyesight failed the test. She still doesn’t require a

walking frame or stick and is described by Mrs Wright as very independent. “She drives me crazy. She knows what she wants and (has a) very strong personality,” Mrs Wright said. Mrs Grimwood had an afternoon tea on Wednesday at Yaldhurst Courts where she lives. “The lovely people here put on an afternoon tea for her and she was so excited about that,” Mrs Wright said. She said they also had a family afternoon tea for her mother on Saturday.

AVOCADO AND CARAMELISED PINEAPPLE SALAD

Ingredients

Ribeye steaks, at least an 1.5 inches thick Olive oil Salt Fresh ground black pepper

2 Tbsp Brown sugar ½ Pineapple, peeled 2 Tbsp Butter 3 Avocados, firm but ripe ½ Red onion 100g Blue cheese, creamy ½ Red chilli 2 cups Salad leaves, washed

Directions Preheat your grill to high heat. If you have a sear burner and a steak that is more than an inch thick, get one side of the grill going at about medium-high in case you need to cook it through a little more after the sear. Remove the ribeye steaks from their packaging and rub them down with some olive oil and then coat a generous amount of salt and freshly ground black pepper. The olive oil provides just enough fat to help the salt and pepper create a great, caramelised crust. Clean and lubricate your grill grates with some cooking oil on a rolled up piece of paper towel (using tongs, of course). Place the ribeye steaks on the hottest part of the grill and then stand ready with the tongs.

Dressing 1 Orange, zest and juice 1 Chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp Ground cumin 4 Tbsp Avocado oil 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper At this point, you are on flareup watch. The fat dripping off of the steaks could create a flare-up. If a flare-up occurs and doesn’t go away in a few seconds, simply use your tongs to slide the steaks away from the open flame until the flame dies down and then move them back over the heat. Continue to grill with the lid open for about 4-6min. Flip the steaks over onto the

other side, still over the hottest part of the grill. Grill the ribeye steaks for an additional 4-6min on the other side, lid open, for a medium-rare delicious steak. Remove the steaks from the grill and allow to rest for 5min before serving. The resting period is important so that the juices don’t run out when you cut into the ribeye, so be patient.

Cool. Cut the avocados into 2-3cm cubes. Break the cheese into small pieces and slice the onion paper-thin. Slice the chilli into thin pieces. News Fendalton residents to have say on traffic problems By Julia Evans FENDALTON residents will now get a say in addressing road safety issues in thie area. It comes three weeks after it revealed a memo from city council chief executive Karleen Edwards, which said the issues on Glandovy, Straven and Idris Rds could be “sufficiently addressed” by having a work shop with the community board, not the public. But the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood CommuDavid Cartwright nity Board has vetoed the instruction. But resident James Wilding holds reservations that the city council could still exclude the public. “The board has recognised the validity of the community’s concerns. We now hope that the city council does so also and swiftly addresses them,” he said. Dr Edwards said she is satisfied the board has made its decision on the matter with the community’s interests in mind. “The board agreed that, an around the table, informal meeting with all parties would be the best approach, rather than a more formal working Karleen Edwards group.” Chairman David Cartwright told Western News the board wants to create a “three-legged stool” made up of the board, city council and residents. “If you only have two of those legs, the stool falls over,” he said. A date for that meeting has not yet been set but Mr Cartwright said it would be within a fortnight.

At Kirkwood we are very proud of our children and their achievements, here at Kirkwood. Our pupils have many opportunities to participate in a wide range of education activities including Technology; ICT; Music; Drama; Education Outside The Classroom; Leadership roles; Camps; Academic challenges; and Sports. Our pupils develop a wide range of skills which helps them develop educationally, socially, emotionally and physically during their time with us. Just a few of the opportunities our pupils have experienced this year are as follows:

China Trip

Sports

Education New Zealand supported our trip to China this year. Our China Sister School, Chengdu Bilingual Experimental School, organised homestays and schooling for our pupils. Emma, Kendall, Ashtyn, Dante and Grace had the most amazing experience while they were away. They really enjoyed experiencing new sights, sounds, tasting different types of food and learning about the culture and people of China.

We participate in a large variety of sports including: Netball; Football; Cross Country; Skiing; Swimming; Rugby; Basketball; Waterpolo; Touch Rugby; Korf Ball; Table Tennis; Badminton; Athletics and Gymnastics. We also compete in the Canterbury Association of Intermediate and Middle Schooling competitions. Our school is well known for the courtesy, co-operation and sportsmanship of our teams and we value this highly. Some of the highlights this year are as follows:

Education Outside the Classroom

Bowls Tournament - we had 5 of 6 teams finish in the top three for their categories and one team winning theirs;

We visit many different places within our community such as Canterbury Museum, Riccarton House and the Art Gallery. We also offer class camps for our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils. This year our Year 7’s camped at Purau Bay where they experienced canoeing, abseiling and camping skills, along with getting to know their class and developing friendships.

Boys’ Basketball team won their competition for the 4th year in a row in the Friday night competition; Girls’ Basketball team was awarded the fair play award for the South Island Tournament;

Our Year 8 pupils have just returned from the Otago Rail Trail and Wellington camps. These camps both provide great opportunities for learning and personal development.

Kirkwood Badminton Team finished 3rd in the South Island Tournament; Table Tennis Kirkwood Team finished 3rd in the Winter Weekly Sport.

Technology & ICT

School Production

Our on-site technology centre provides our pupils with a range of creative learning experiences in different areas: Foods; Electronics and Materials (metal, wood, fabric and plastic). Our pupils have created a large variety of work this year. We also participate in Robofest, Future in Tech programme, Food competitions, Robotics, EPro8, 3D printing, Upcycling and Maori Carving.

Every second year we produce a school performance for all interested pupils. This year our production was called ‘Off White and the Seven Scaffolders’.

Many of our pupils have been selected to represent Canterbury and/or have been selected for the Nationals in various sports which makes our school proud.

Programmes focus on Planning for Practice, Brief Development and Outcome Evaluation. We have pods of touch screen laptops, ordinary laptops and Chromebooks for classroom use to enable pupils to develop their skills. Pupils are also welcome to bring their own technology. More pupils are doing this each year. We recommend that parents check which devices are used at the High School they think their children will be attending.

Blues Awards • Outstanding achievements, whether they are personal or at school, are celebrated via our Blues Awards system. • Our students can achieve a Blues Award in various areas such as Cultural, Sports and Academic. • An Outstanding Elite Blues Award may be achieved if a student has achieved an Academic, Cultural and a Sporting Blue. • There are quite strict criteria for receiving a Blue and these are outlined on our website www.kirkwood.school.nz

Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles?

he team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients visit complaining of pain in one or both hips. Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a back muscle could also be the cause, as shown in the image. Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “I will end up in a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to

her health and wellbeing. At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques (massage and triggerpoint deactivation techniques) are used to release the muscles. The client also gets a home exercise program designed to mobilize and stretch the hip, strengthen the important core muscles and increase general strength and balance. They

teach a movement sequence that stretches the hip in all directions whilst the client is able to lie safely on their bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients. In many cases having the muscles released and being taught how to maintain it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. If severe arthritis is the underlying cause, some

maintenance therapy may be necessary, but that is often more affordable and, for older patients, better tolerated than surgery. In very few treatments the client will know if it is going to work for them or not, without financial commitment.

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.
